Additional information

Sancho II's reign ended not in death but in deposition — a rare outcome in medieval Iberian politics. Pope Innocent IV issued the bull Grandi non immerito in 1245, declaring Sancho incapable of governance and transferring power to his brother Afonso. The king died in exile in Toledo three years later, never having recovered his throne. Coinage struck under his name spans that entire contested reign, making precise dating within the issue essentially impossible.
