Jani Beg took Baghdad from the Jalayirids in 1356, and this dinar — struck the following year — is a direct product of that conquest. The Baghdad mint had been operating under Jalayirid control; its reactivation under Golden Horde authority was as much a political statement as a monetary one. Jani Beg died in 1357, the same year this coin was struck, making issues from this mint in his name exceptionally short-lived.
The reign effectively ended Horde expansion into Iraq — his successor Berdi Beg abandoned the region almost immediately.
