Obverse description The obverse presents a purely epigraphic design typical of Abbasid gold coinage, with multiple concentric bands of Kufic Arabic legend filling the field. The central area contains the shahada and mint formula arranged in horizontal lines within a beaded inner circle, while an outer marginal legend encircles the entire composition within a beaded border. The inscription reads the declaration of faith together with a Quranic verse, rendered in fine, deeply struck Kufic script characteristic of donative issues of the Caliph al-Mutawakkil (r. 847–861 AH). The flan is notably small and thick, consistent with the donative type struck outside regular circulation requirements. No figural imagery is present, in accordance with Islamic numismatic tradition.
