| Obverse description | Bearded head of Hercules in right profile, clad in the Nemean lion's skin headdress, the scalp worn over the crown with the forepaws knotted at the throat. A secondary symbol appears to the left of the effigy, varying by emission: dagger, club, spearhead, sword-belt, or thunderbolt; some specimens are struck without a symbol. The portraiture is rendered in a bold, vigorous Italic style characteristic of Bruttian bronze coinage of the Second Punic War period. |

| Reverse description | Athena advancing to the right, her head turned to face the viewer frontally, a spear carried over her right shoulder and a large round shield gripped with both hands. A plough appears in the right field, serving as a secondary type symbol. The ethnic legend BPETTION is inscribed in the field, written in Greek characters, identifying the Bruttian issuing authority. The composition reflects strong influence from the coinage of Tarentum and other South Italian Greek mints active during the late third century BC. |
