Obverse description Central field displays the Basel crozier (the city's heraldic staff symbol), rendered in high relief within a lobed, quatrefoil-shaped ornamental frame, characteristic of early sixteenth-century Swiss die-cutting. The crozier head features an elegant volute with a transverse bar, flanked by stylized foliate or fluted drapery elements forming the lower portion of the cartouche. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the circumferential legend. The outer legend reads ✠ MONETA ⁑ BASILIENSIS ⁑ 1520, incised in Gothic uncial characters with pellet stops, encircled by a dentilated rim. The overall composition reflects the Renaissance craftsmanship associated with Urs Graf's work at the Basel Mint.
