Obverse description Central field depicts the crowned arms of Basel — a diagonal black crosier on white ground — supported by two confronted basilisks with wings spread, their tails intertwined below the shield, rendered in high relief characteristic of late Gothic die-work. The heraldic composition is enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend reads +MONETA: BASILIENSIS: with the date 1499 incorporated within the outer circular inscription, the numerals separated by a cross pattée at top.
