Obverse description Central field displays the Basel civic arms: a black crosier (pastoral staff) on a white shield, flanked on either side by a spread-winged eagle displayed, the whole forming a heraldic achievement typical of late medieval Swiss municipal coinage. The shield is set within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding circular legend reads +MONETA: BASILIENSIS: 1499, in Gothic uncial lettering, with the date split across the upper field. The overall execution is characteristic of late 15th-century hammered silver coinage from the Upper Rhine region.
