Not a banknote in any monetary sense, but lottery coupons issued by charitable hospitals in Bangladesh during the 1970s occupy an underappreciated corner of notaphilic collecting — they were produced as fundraising instruments at a time when the newly independent state had almost no functioning public health infrastructure. Dhaka Shishu Hospital, founded in 1972, relied heavily on these lotteries to fund basic operations in its earliest years.
The 1977 issue predates the hospital's formal international donor arrangements, placing it squarely in the period of greatest financial precarity.
