Obverse description Central plain cross pattee enclosed within a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four equal quadrants. The surrounding legend reads + PhILIPPVS REX in Latin capitals, separated by small cross stops, running between the beaded circle and the crenellated outer border characteristic of the tournois type. The die-work is typical of late 13th to early 14th century French hammered billon coinage, with flat relief and irregular flan.

Reverse description The reverse displays the celebrated chatel tournois design: a stylized representation of the castle of Tours, depicted as a turreted tower with an arched gateway below and flanking turrets, all set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads + TVRONVS CIVIS in Latin capitals between the beaded circle and the crenellated outer rim. This castle motif is the defining reverse type of the denier tournois series and remained largely unchanged across successive French royal reigns.
