Obverse description Central field displays a fleur-de-lis within a beaded inner circle, symbolizing the French royal arms. The device is struck on a roughly flan typical of hammered billon coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer rim, reading FRANCISCVS FRANC REX, identifying Francis I as King of France. The lettering is Gothic in character and somewhat irregularly spaced due to the hand-struck nature of the piece. The overall style is consistent with early 16th-century Dauphiné regional coinage.
