Obverse description Within a raised inner circle, two fleurs-de-lis arranged side by side are enclosed within a trilobe (trefoil-shaped) frame, a characteristic design element of the Tournois coinage tradition. The field is plain, and the composition is rendered in the bold, simplified style typical of late medieval French hammered billon coinage. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin reads + LVDOVICVS x FRA n x REX, identifying Louis XI as King of France, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border.
