Henri III's denier tournois issues from Poitiers — operating as mint mark "G" — fall within the period of the Wars of Religion, when the French monetary system was under sustained pressure from hoarding, debasement, and the disruption of provincial mint operations. The Poitiers mint had a complicated relationship with royal authority during these years, as the surrounding Poitou region changed hands repeatedly between Catholic and Huguenot forces.
Copper deniers of this reign are frequently found in poor condition precisely because they circulated hard among populations with little access to higher denominations during the conflict.
