| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Carolingian-style papal monogram of Pope Theodore II, composed of interlaced letters within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the angular, architectural manner typical of late 9th-century Roman coinage. A circular Latin legend runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer border, invoking the name of the pope and Saint Peter. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hammered silver production of the period. |
