Reverse description A quadruped animal, likely a lion or similar heraldic beast, advances to the left in the central field, rendered in a stylised, archaic manner typical of medieval Hungarian hammered coinage. A six-pointed star or floral rosette is positioned above the creature in the upper field. The design fills the flan, with no surrounding legend, and the field shows the characteristic uneven surface of a hammered strike.

Additional information

Stephen V ruled for just two years before dying at age 33, likely of illness contracted while fleeing Cumان allies-turned-enemies in the marshes near the Danube. His reign was consumed by the aftermath of the Mongol invasions and a bitter civil war fought against his own father, Béla IV, that had split the kingdom's administration into two effectively rival courts for nearly a decade before his accession.

The extreme lightness of this issue reflects the prolonged debasement of Hungarian silver coinage across the mid-thirteenth century — a fiscal consequence of rebuilding fortifications after 1241.
