Stephen III came to the Hungarian throne as a teenager in 1162, immediately contested by his uncles László II and István IV, both backed by Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos. The resulting dynastic struggle produced multiple competing coin issues within the same decade, making attribution of minor deniers from this period genuinely difficult — catalogers rely heavily on die studies rather than iconographic distinctions to separate the claimants' issues.
