Stephen III came to the Hungarian throne as a teenager in 1162, immediately contested by Byzantine-backed rivals — his uncles László II and István IV were successively installed as counter-kings with Constantinople's support, forcing Stephen III into brief exile before he consolidated control. The political instability of the early reign almost certainly disrupted minting continuity, and the chronological attribution of specific die groupings within this type remains unsettled among specialists.
