Reverse description A large Gothic letter S is displayed centrally within a small pearled or beaded inner circle, itself enclosed by the surrounding circular legend. The beaded inner circle frames the S device neatly, a design element characteristic of feudal deniers of western France from the early thirteenth century. The peripheral legend reads MALLEONIS, referencing the lordship of Mauléon, introduced by a cross pommée stop. The flan shows typical hammered irregularity with flat areas consistent with the striking technique of the period.
