Reverse description A bold plain cross with wide arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded or toothed inner circle. The cross arms extend nearly to the inner circle, with the quadrants left plain. The surrounding peripheral legend is separated from the central motif by the beaded border and runs around the irregular flan. The execution is characteristic of the rough hammered technique prevalent in early eleventh-century Gascon feudal monetary production.

Additional information

Sanche William, Count of Gascony and Duke of Vasconia, ruled a territory that sat uncomfortably between the competing pressures of Capetian France and the Iberian kingdoms. His coinage authority derived not from royal grant but from long-standing Gascon autonomy — the Bordelais mints had operated under local control since Carolingian devolution. The Denier type attributed to his reign is among the earliest clearly attributable issues from the Bordeaux series, preceding the more regularized feudal coinage that emerged after 1032.
