Obverse description Central quartered shield bearing the combined arms of Anjou and Bar, surmounted by a small escutcheon of Lorraine, the whole enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic shield is rendered in the Gothic style typical of early 15th-century hammered billon coinage. A circular Latin legend runs between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular periphery. The overall design reflects the dynastic pretensions of René I as Duke of Bar.
