Reverse description Frontal bust of Saint Stephen, patron saint of Halberstadt Cathedral, depicted in nimbed episcopal or diaconal vestments rendered in the flat, linear Romanesque style characteristic of early 12th-century German ecclesiastical coinage. The figure is shown facing, with a halo indicated by a raised arc above the head, and arms partially visible at the sides. The circumscription S. STEPHANVS identifies the saint along the periphery of the irregular hammered flan. The design reflects the devotional iconographic program common to Halberstadt episcopal coinage of the period.
