| Obverse description | The obverse displays the abbreviated episcopal title 'EPS' prominently in the central field, executed in a crude Romanesque lettering style typical of 11th-century French ecclesiastical coinage. The surrounding legend reads ✠ RADB EPS, identifying the issuing bishop Ratbod II of Noyon, with a cross pommée serving as the initial mark. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck hammered production of the period. The lettering is deeply but unevenly impressed, with some characters partially weak due to die wear and variable striking pressure. |
