| Obverse description | Central field displays a stylized monogram of the royal name RADLFVS (Ralph), rendered in the Carolingian monogram tradition with interlaced letters of crude, hand-cut workmanship characteristic of early tenth-century hammered silver coinage. The monogram is enclosed within a plain inner border, with the circumscribed Latin legend RΛDLFVS REX (Ralph, King) running around the periphery, introduced by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, with the design showing the rough, textured surface typical of the hammered technique employed at the Lyon mint during this period. |
