| Obverse description | Central field bears the royal name FRA/NCO arranged in two lines within a beaded inner circle, with the letters NCO in retrograde. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise, identifies the king as Philip, King of the Franks. The lettering is characteristic of the irregular, somewhat rustic style typical of Capetian hammered billon coinage of the late 12th to early 13th century. |
