Reverse description The reverse displays a bold, monogram-like arrangement of letters set within a cross framework dividing the field into four quadrants, a characteristic Carolingian cross-monogram design. The letters, rendered in large, crude uncial or semi-uncial forms, spell out the mint name TRIER (Treveri) and are interlaced across the arms of the cross. The overall composition is typical of Pepin the Short's coinage, where the mint designation is presented as an intertwined monogram rather than a continuous circular legend. The flan is irregular and the strike slightly off-center, consistent with hammered 8th-century Frankish deniers.
