| Obverse description | Irregular flan typical of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The field bears a two-line Latin inscription reading REX / FR, abbreviating the royal title and the designation of the Franks, rendered in bold, somewhat crude capital letters characteristic of 8th-century Frankish die-cutting. The lettering occupies the majority of the coin's surface with no border or decorative element surrounding it. The style reflects the transitional period of Carolingian monetary reform under Pepin the Short. |
