| Obverse description | A plain cross with squared arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The royal legend PIPINVS REX (King Pepin) is disposed around the periphery between the beaded circle and the outer edge of the flan, preceded by a cross pattée. The lettering is executed in a rough Carolingian lapidary style characteristic of ninth-century Aquitanian coinage, with individual letters of variable size reflecting hand-engraved dies. The overall composition follows the standard Carolingian denier format established under Charlemagne and continued by his successors. |
