Obverse description Within a central beaded circle, the monogram of OTTO is rendered in bold interlaced capital letters occupying the inner field, with a small pellet at the center. The surrounding legend reads OTTO IMPERATOR, distributed around the outer border of the coin flan. Star-shaped or lozenge ornaments are interspersed between the legend letters in the outer field, a characteristic decorative feature of Ottonian imperial coinage. The overall design follows the Carolingian-derived monogram tradition adapted for the Ottonian dynasty. The hammered flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of tenth-century Italian deniers.
