| Obverse description | Schematic bust of St. John the Baptist facing right, rendered in the crude Romanesque style typical of 11th-century hammered deniers, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The facial features are summarily indicated, with a prominent eye and suggested drapery at the neck. The surrounding legend reads * S IOHANNES in Latin characters distributed around the beaded border. The flan is irregular and the relief is uneven, consistent with hand-struck coinage of the period. |

The flan edges are characteristically irregular, and the strike is somewhat off-centre, as is common for hammered medieval issues of this series. |
