Obverse description Central device consisting of a quartered heraldic shield divided per pale, with the dexter half bearing a plain field and the sinister half bearing diagonal barry lines, representing the arms of the Habsburgs and the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, itself enclosed by a prominent outer beaded border running along the full circumference of the irregularly shaped flan. The design is rendered in low relief consistent with hammered bracteate technique of the early fifteenth century.
