Reverse description A plain cross occupies the central field, contained within a beaded inner circle that separates it from the surrounding marginal legend. The cross, with arms of roughly equal length, is a standard Carolingian reverse type affirming ecclesiastical authority. The outer legend SCE MARIEM identifies the patron saint of the issuing church of Sainte-Marie de Laon, rendered in debased Carolingian majuscules. The irregular flan and weak strike are consistent with provincial hammered production of the late 9th century.
