Obverse description Central field occupied by the royal Carolingian monogram of King Odo, composed of interlaced letters in the Carolingian tradition, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is boldly rendered in relief, characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the beaded circle, invoking the king's name and divine authority. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hand-struck deniers of the period. The overall style reflects the Carolingian epigraphic and artistic conventions of the late ninth century.
