Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the royal name and title of King Odo are disposed in cruciform arrangement across four quadrants of the field, reading in debased Carolingian Latin capitals. A circumscribed legend runs along the outer border, further identifying the ruler as king by divine grace. The lettering, characteristic of late 9th-century West Frankish provincial coinage, exhibits the irregularity typical of hand-engraved dies of the period. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian cross-monogram type established under the earlier Frankish kings.
