Obverse description Stylized male head in profile facing right, rendered in the La Tène Celtic artistic tradition. The hair is composed of six large S-shaped locks, inverted and cascading forward over the face in an ornamental manner. A prominent curved element suggestive of a ship prow or battleship motif appears behind the head. The legend NHI appears in degenerate Greek-derived lettering within the field.

Additional information

The Suessiones occupied the territory around modern Soissons in northern Gaul, and were considered by Caesar himself — in the Bellum Gallicum — to be the most powerful tribe in the Belgic confederation, their king Diviciacus having once held sway over Britain as well. This coinage falls squarely within the period of the Gallic Wars, when tribal mints were producing silver at pace with the military and political pressures Caesar was applying across the region. The DT#207 classification places this firmly among the early Belgic deniers whose fabric and legend traditions show distinct cross-channel influence.
