| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a plain cross pattée extending to the inner border, dividing the field into four quarters. The surrounding legend, rendered in uncial Latin characters, reads MADEVS COMES (Count Matthew), arranged in a circular band around the cross. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the period. The overall style is typical of feudal French deniers of the late twelfth century. |
