| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a plain pattée cross with globules disposed in each quadrant, the arms of the cross dividing the field into four sections each containing pellets arranged in a triangular pattern. The cross is contained within a beaded inner circle. The legend MATHEVS, rendered in uncial characters, runs along the outer margin between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular periphery, reading the name of the issuing count, Matthew of Alsace. |
