Obverse description Central field depicts a stylized architectural facade, likely representing the cathedral of Mainz, shown as a twin-towered structure with a rounded arch gateway between the towers, surmounted by a cross finial. The building is rendered in a flat, highly schematic Romanesque style characteristic of Ottonian and Salian coinage. Small cross pattée ornaments flank the structure in the upper field. The surrounding circular legend, partially visible due to the irregular flan, reads + LVBOLD ARCHIEPS, identifying Archbishop Luitpold I of Mainz.
