Obverse description A plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The royal legend circumscribes the design between the beaded circle and the irregular flan edge, executed in degraded Carolingian lettering characteristic of late ninth- to early tenth-century hammered silver coinage. The die workmanship is typical of the provincial Lotharingian workshops of the period, with uneven letter spacing and slightly blundered characters.
