Obverse description Central field bears the Carolingian royal monogram of LVDOVICVS, composed of interlaced letters forming a cross-like cipher, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style with bold, deeply struck strokes. A beaded or plain outer border frames the design.
