Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross is bold and simply rendered in the Carolingian tradition. The royal name legend LVDOVVICVS, referencing King Louis, runs around the periphery outside the beaded circle, separated by a cross pommée stop. The overall design is characteristic of late ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with a slightly irregular flan and somewhat uneven strike.
