| Obverse description | Central field features a Carolingian monogram composed of interlaced letters forming the name HLVDOVICVS (Louis), enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style with bold, intertwined strokes. Surrounding the beaded circle, the Latin legend reads ✠ GRΛTIΛ DEI REX, invoking the king's divine right to rule. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of ninth-century hammered silver coinage. The overall style is consistent with Carolingian royal deniers struck under Louis II the Stammerer. |
