Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of HLVDOVVICVS (Louis), composed of interlaced letters in raised relief within a beaded inner circle. The monogram, characteristic of the Carolingian chancery tradition, combines the constituent letters of the king's name into an elaborate ligature. The design fills the flan with no additional legend, the entire device enclosed by a peripheral beaded border.

Reverse description A plain Greek cross with expanding arms occupies the center of the field, set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading clockwise, gives the mint name MOGONTIA (Mainz), introduced by a cross pattée. The lettering is rendered in bold Carolingian capitals, and the entire design is enclosed by a beaded outer border consistent with Carolingian denier production of the period.
