Obverse description A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Surrounding the beaded circle, the imperial legend IDOVVICVS IMP (Louis, Emperor) is arranged in capital letters within the outer field, reading continuously around the circumference. The lettering is struck in a characteristic Carolingian style, with bold, evenly spaced characters typical of the period. The flan is irregular, as is customary for hammered issues of this era.
