Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the center of the field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Radiating lines extend outward from the beaded circle toward the outer border, creating a sunburst effect characteristic of Carolingian coinage. The imperial legend runs continuously around the periphery in Latin majuscules between the beaded circle and the outer rim. The overall design is typical of the monogram-less denier type struck under Louis the Pious.
