| Obverse description | A cross pattée occupies the central field, enclosed within a plain inner circle formed by a beaded border. Radiating lines fill the area between the beaded circle and the outer legend, lending the design a distinctive sunburst-like appearance characteristic of Carolingian coinage. The imperial legend is disposed around the periphery in bold, slightly irregular Latin capitals, initiated by a cross pommée. The overall style is typical of the Pavia mint under Louis the Pious, with the design reflecting Carolingian reform coinage conventions established after 818. |
