Obverse description A plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the center of the field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP surrounds the beaded border, identifying the issuer as Louis, Emperor. The die-cut lettering is bold and slightly irregular in spacing, characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The design is austere and emblematic, reflecting the Carolingian reform coinage aesthetic introduced under Louis the Pious.
