Obverse description A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. Surrounding the beaded circle, the imperial legend is disposed in capital letters reading clockwise within the outer field. The design is typical of Carolingian monetary reform coinage, executed in the hammered technique with characteristic irregular flan shaping. The lettering is bold and slightly irregular, consistent with hand-engraved dies of the early ninth century.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering ✠ HLVDOVVICVS IMP
(Translation: Louis, emperor.)
