Obverse description A plain cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Surrounding this circle, a circular legend in Latin capital letters reads HLVDOVVICVS IMP, identifying Louis the Pious as emperor. The die is hand-engraved in the Carolingian hammered tradition, with bold, slightly irregular lettering characteristic of provincial workshop production. The outer border consists of a raised rim of varying regularity, reflecting the hand-struck nature of the flan.
