Obverse description Central plain cross with a globule at the base of the upright, enclosed within a circular inner ring. The surrounding legend HLVDOVVICVS IMP is inscribed in large Carolingian capital letters within the outer field, reading clockwise. The design is characteristic of the reformed Carolingian coinage type introduced under Louis the Pious, with bold, well-spaced lettering filling the annular legend band.
