| Obverse description | Two-line inscription in large Carolingian majuscule letters occupying the central field, reading HLU / DUIH, an abbreviated form of the name HLVDOVICVS (Louis). The legend is contained within a border of pellets, consistent with the hammered coinage style of the Carolingian period. The irregular flan and bold letterforms are characteristic of early medieval Frankish mint production. |
