Obverse description Central field occupied by a plain cross pattée with a single pellet in each of the four quarters, rendered in the crude, bold style characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage. The cross is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend disposed in the surrounding annular field. The die work is typical of late Carolingian provincial minting, with irregular flan edges and uneven relief.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering ✠ LOTHARIVS REX
(Translation: King Lothair.)
